Onebright

Project Overview:

Attensi gamified training solution, developed for over 1 year for mobile, 7 hours over 4 games to train players in a variety of mental health best practises in the workplace. The topics include: intro to mental health for leaders, intro to mental health for peers, neurodiversity, 5 ways to wellbeing.

Roles and responsibilities

Design

onlinear & linear narrative design, visual scripting in proprietary language and tools, tool development, design documentation, internal development initiatives, bug fixing, analysing playtest data and feedback, gameplay scripting, quest design

Writing

writing scripts & all supporting material, stakeholder management, topic research, pitching, image editing, iterating in collaboration with multiple departments, deck creation

Process and approach

Process

Scoping conversation with Onebright, High Level Design deck creation for all 4 mobile games, iteration, and sign-off. Content then split into each topic: liaised with healthcare professionals and other “own voices” subject matter experts, wrote sections of each game, then had a stakeholder meeting to gather feedback, feedback implementation and new content development, image creation, bug fixing, map design, focus test, internal sign-off, client sign-off

Approach

Onebright is a partnership rather than a simple client, which means I was able to shape the topics, tone, and approach for this project. I also pioneered new tools and new uses of existing tools within Attensi’s proprietary development platform. I had to realistically and sensitively depict such diverse topics as suicide, depression, burnout, structural barriers to people with neurodiverse conditions, and workplace accommodations. My biggest challenge was balancing many competing wants: making sure that companies buying the solution were protected legally, that the players were left feeling empowered and not helpless, that the advice acknowledges diversity of experience within a limited palette of game mechanics

Tools and technologies

Figma, Pixlr, Attensi Creator (proprietary scripting engine based on Unity), Jira, Agile, Slack, Teams, Confluence, Miro, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word

Sample of work

This content is under NDA

Team collaboration

Internal

Simulation Director provided high level feedback, Project Manager kept project running to time and budget

Client-side

Subject Matter Experts guided us to ascertain what the best practises were for their training (incl. Medical personnel, HR, lawyers, and people with lived experience of mental health challenges)

Result and impact

Brewdog Mental Health and Wellbeing Lead: “never felt so engaged by a virtual training, it challenged how I thought” and “every character evoked sympathy” - I also received a separate email from her that said “Thank you for doing what you do and doing it so well, you should be incredibly proud of yourself!” WTW Focus Group Chief Commercial Officer at Onebright

Reflection and improvement

It’s been very rewarding to work with experts on such important topics - it’s stretched my game design and narrative design skillset to ensure that we’re creating disability-friendly content across competing access needs. I reworked fast and memorisation-focused minigame types to allow for slower processing and reflection. I also developed new uses of tagging within the proprietary toolset to facilitate a more open unscored kind of conversation instead of a pure training dialogue. From a content perspective, I appreciate the opportunity to grow into some kind of subject matter expert!
